China Trade Fair Season: Which Fairs Are Worth Your Flight?
Most buyers know one fair: the Canton Fair. But China runs a year-round exhibition circuit that dwarfs any single event — and the expensive mistake isn't picking the wrong booth, it's flying 16,000 km to the wrong fair for your category, or visiting a fair when the permanent market next door would have served you better. This guide maps China's major sourcing fairs by region, category and season, with the dates we've confirmed for 2026–2027. Dates marked as confirmed come from the organizers' own sites; anything listed as a typical window must be re-confirmed before you book flights.
1. Start with the cluster, not the fair
China's trade fairs cluster in five regions, and each cluster pairs a fair scene with a factory belt. Choosing the cluster first saves more money than choosing the fair:
| Cluster | Core cities | Known for | Factory belt nearby |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pearl River Delta West | Guangzhou · Foshan | Canton Fair, furniture (CIFF), lighting, building materials | Foshan & Zhongshan factories 1–2 h away |
| Pearl River Delta East | Shenzhen · Dongguan · Hong Kong | Electronics, drones, hardware, Global Sources & HKTDC fairs | Shenzhen/Dongguan factories 30–90 min away |
| Yangtze Delta | Shanghai · Suzhou · Ningbo | Industrial, machinery, beauty, food fairs; East China Fair | Suzhou/Ningbo factories 1–3 h away |
| Yiwu (Zhejiang) | Yiwu | The world's largest small-commodity permanent market + Yiwu Fair each October | The market itself is open year-round — the fair is optional |
| Beijing–Tianjin | Beijing · Tianjin | Niche industrial and services fairs | Thinner factory density; rarely the first choice for buying trips |
2. Confirmed dates: 2026–2027
These are the anchor fairs with dates published by their organizers (verified November 2026):
| Fair | City / Venue | Confirmed dates | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canton Fair (140th, Phase 1–3) | Guangzhou, Pazhou | Oct 15–19 · Oct 23–27 · Oct 31–Nov 4, 2026 | The world's largest export fair — 13 sections across electronics, home, textiles. Full breakdown in our Canton Fair guide |
| Global Sources Hong Kong Shows | Hong Kong, AsiaWorld-Expo | Oct 11–14 & Oct 18–21, 2026 (two phases) | Consumer electronics, mobile & accessories, gaming, smart home, lifestyle — strong OEM/ODM verified-supplier format |
| Yiwu Fair (32nd) | Yiwu, Zhejiang | Oct 21–24, 2026 | ~4,500 booths, ~3,000 exhibitors over 110,000 m² of general merchandise — but remember Yiwu's permanent market runs all year |
| CIIE (9th China International Import Expo) | Shanghai, NECC | Nov 5–10, 2026 | China's flagship import fair — see the caution in section 4 |
| East China Fair (35th ECF) | Shanghai, SNIEC | Mar 1–4, 2027 | ~5,800 booths of light industry, apparel and home goods — China's "first export fair of the year" |
| CIFF Guangzhou (59th) | Guangzhou, Pazhou + Poly WTCE | Mar 18–21 & Mar 28–31, 2027 | The world's largest furniture fair: 850,000 m² across home furniture (phase 1) and office/commercial + machinery (phase 2) |
Other fairs worth knowing (typical windows — confirm with organizers)
| Fair | City | Typical window | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Sources spring edition | Hong Kong | April (two phases) | Electronics & lifestyle |
| HKTDC Electronics Fair (+ spring edition) | Hong Kong | October / April | Electronics, components |
| China Beauty Expo | Shanghai | May | Cosmetics, personal care |
| SIAL Shanghai | Shanghai | May | Food & beverage |
| CIFF Shanghai | Shanghai, Hongqiao | September | Furniture (second session) |
| Automechanika Shanghai | Shanghai | Nov–Dec | Auto parts & aftermarket |
3. Match the fair to your category
| You buy… | First choice | Also consider | Pair with factory days in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consumer electronics, gadgets, phone accessories | Global Sources Hong Kong (Oct/Apr) | Canton Fair Phase 1; HKTDC fairs | Shenzhen · Dongguan |
| Furniture, home decor, outdoor living | CIFF Guangzhou (Mar) | Canton Fair Phase 2; CIFF Shanghai (Sep) | Foshan · Zhongshan · Dongguan |
| General merchandise, gifts, toys, tools, sundries | Yiwu — the permanent market, any month | Yiwu Fair (Oct); East China Fair (Mar) | Yiwu/ Jinhua; Ningbo for export logistics |
| Apparel, textiles, fashion accessories | East China Fair (Mar) | Canton Fair Phase 3 | Shaoxing · Hangzhou · Dongguan (garment) |
| Machinery, industrial goods, auto parts | Specialized industrial fairs in Shanghai | Canton Fair Phase 1 (machinery sections) | Suzhou · Ningbo · Wuxi |
| Beauty, food & beverage | China Beauty Expo / SIAL (May, Shanghai) | Canton Fair Phase 3 (food) | Shanghai + regional producers |
The pattern: electronics buyers point at Hong Kong–Shenzhen, home & living buyers at Guangzhou–Foshan, and commodity buyers often skip fairs entirely and go straight to Yiwu's market, where 75,000+ permanent stalls don't close when a fair ends.
4. Fairs that are NOT worth your flight (for sourcing, at least)
- CIIE — know what it is before you go. The China International Import Expo (Nov 5–10, 2026, Shanghai) is spectacular and enormous — 162 countries and regions, over 4,100 foreign exhibitors — but it is an import fair: the buyers walking the aisles are Chinese companies purchasing from overseas exhibitors. If your goal is sourcing Chinese-made goods, CIIE is the wrong tool. It becomes relevant only if you want to sell into China or find foreign brands to distribute back home.
- Duplicate-category fairs in the same month. Several second-tier fairs copy the names of the big ones ("International…", "China…") with a fraction of the exhibitors. If a fair's website can't show last edition's verified visitor count and exhibitor list, treat it as a marketing event.
- Fairs with no overseas buyer infrastructure. Some strong domestic shows have no English signage, no overseas-buyer registration desk and no interpretation. You can still visit — with a bilingual assistant — but factor that cost into "is this fair worth it".
5. The real ROI: pair every fair with factory days
A fair is a marketing event; a factory is a manufacturing event. The single biggest quality jump in our clients' sourcing comes from adding 2–3 factory days around a fair visit:
- After Global Sources Hong Kong: cross the border and you're in Shenzhen within an hour. Verify the "verified suppliers" at their actual production lines in Bao'an, Longgang or Dongguan.
- Around CIFF Guangzhou: the changeover gap between the two phases (Mar 22–27 in 2027) is ideal for Foshan and Zhongshan furniture factories — the fair shows you the catalog, the factories show you the spray line and the QC bench.
- Instead of (or after) the Yiwu Fair: because the Yiwu market runs year-round, buyers who miss October lose nothing — but book a market day with a local assistant who knows which districts of the market hold your category, then add a Ningbo port/logistics day.
- Between Shanghai fairs: the ECF in early March leaves comfortable margin before CIFF — many buyers do Shanghai (ECF) → Suzhou factories → Guangzhou (CIFF) in one two-week run.
6. Visas and entry for multi-fair trips
- 30-day visa-free entry: as of 2026, ordinary passport holders from 50 countries (UK, Canada, most of the EU, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and more) may enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days for business — enough for a two-fair, two-cluster trip. Most of these policies currently run until Dec 31, 2026 and have been extended repeatedly; re-confirm two months before a spring 2027 trip.
- 240-hour transit waiver: for shorter runs, 57 nationalities can enter via 65 ports with an onward ticket to a third country — handy for a Hong Kong fair plus a quick Shenzhen factory loop.
- Hong Kong is a separate immigration event: most nationalities enter Hong Kong visa-free, but crossing into Shenzhen means clearing Chinese immigration — plan which waiver or visa covers the mainland leg, and carry printed hotel/invitation documents at the border.
7. Two sample itineraries
A. Electronics buyer, 7 days (October route)
- Day 1–2: Global Sources Hong Kong, phase 1 — consumer electronics halls, shortlist 20 suppliers.
- Day 3: phase 2 or HKTDC halls; evening train/logistics across the border to Shenzhen.
- Day 4–5: Shenzhen supplier meetings + factory audits (Bao'an/Dongguan); Huaqiangbei market scan for accessories.
- Day 6: high-speed rail to Guangzhou South (30–40 min) — Canton Fair Phase 1 for machinery/large electronics.
- Day 7: Canton Fair follow-up meetings; fly out from Guangzhou.
B. Home & living buyer, 9 days (March 2027 route)
- Day 1–2: East China Fair, Shanghai — textiles, apparel, home goods.
- Day 3–4: Suzhou/Hangzhou supplier visits; high-speed rail south.
- Day 5–7: CIFF Guangzhou phase 1 (home furniture) — Foshan factory days in the changeover gap.
- Day 8: Foshan/Zhongshan factories; compare fair quotes against factory quotes.
- Day 9: fly out from Guangzhou, samples consolidated through one forwarder.
Both routes lean on the same backbone: China's high-speed rail network — cluster-to-cluster in 1–4 hours. Route details in our high-speed rail guide.
8. Pre-trip checklist
| When | Do |
|---|---|
| 3 months out | Lock the fair + cluster; confirm dates on the organizer's site; book hotels (fair weeks inflate fast); check visa-free eligibility |
| 6–4 weeks out | Pre-register as a buyer on each fair's official site (registration systems differ from the Canton Fair's); request invitation letters if you need an M visa; build the exhibitor target list |
| 2 weeks out | Set up WeChat + Alipay with a bound international card; book factory visits around fair days; arrange cross-border transfers (HK ↔ Shenzhen) |
| In country | Photograph every card-booth pair; ask "factory or trading company?" at every stand; verify certificates before deposits (30/70 T/T) |
| After the trip | Reconcile fair quotes vs factory quotes; consolidate samples with one forwarder; schedule video follow-ups with shortlisted suppliers |
9. FAQ
What are the confirmed China trade fair dates for 2026–2027?
Global Sources Hong Kong: Oct 11–14 & 18–21, 2026. Yiwu Fair: Oct 21–24, 2026. CIIE: Nov 5–10, 2026 (Shanghai). East China Fair: Mar 1–4, 2027 (Shanghai). CIFF Guangzhou: Mar 18–21 & 28–31, 2027. Canton Fair phases for autumn 2026: Oct 15–19, Oct 23–27, Oct 31–Nov 4.
Should I attend both the Canton Fair and Global Sources?
For electronics, yes — they overlap in October and serve different layers: Global Sources is more focused on ready-to-import consumer electronics with verified OEM/ODM suppliers; the Canton Fair Phase 1 adds machinery, appliances and components at greater scale. The two venues are one hour apart, so a combined trip costs little extra.
Is the Yiwu Fair worth attending, or is the market enough?
The market is enough for most categories — that's the point of Yiwu. The fair adds new-product launches and seasonal buying missions in four dense days, but permanent stalls update stock weekly. If your dates don't match October 21–24, go anyway.
How many fairs can I cover in one trip?
Two comfortably, three if they're geographically staged (Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Guangzhou in one week works; Shanghai + Guangzhou in one week is tight but done on the March route above). Every extra fair costs a day of logistics, not just a day of walking.
